Social abilities and their role in social inclusion

Thanks to our customs in behaviour, thinking and emotions we communicate with other people, and they allow us to have interpersonal relationships and achieve affective and instrumental goals. Having tools to use in our relationships with other people and with ourselves can help us create rewarding bonds that respect our rights and facilitate to accomplish our objectives.

In the Abrazando Ilusiones Foundation we consider that knowing and acquiring social abilities is essential for the personal and professional development of anyone. Thus, their teaching within the INACICAM project is key to achieve social inclusion and access to employment.

Social abilities are closely related with the way we think and feel. For this reason, the classes of the project have been oriented towards reflection and self-knowledge, without neglecting the learning of new concepts and insisting on effective communication, assertiveness, empathy, and conflict resolution.

A good and effective communication as well as active listening are really important in both professional and personal life. The concept of empathy should be internalised so we can put ourselves in other’s shoes and understand what they are trying to tell us. In many situations, we assume the other shares our point of view and several conflicts and misunderstandings stem from the lack of active listening.

In addition, assertiveness occupies a remarkable place in our daily life. Neither apathy nor aggressiveness can help us defend our rights or someone else’s, while assertiveness allows us to communicate our feelings without hurting others and standing for our rights at the same time. Nonetheless, to defend our rights we should think about self-esteem and self-concept, which define our professional profile along with other abilities.

To conclude, we would like to highlight that the activities organised within the INACICAM project provide with competences that facilitate effective communication and social and labour inclusion. Learning Spanish and new technologies, social abilities and job skills will motivate the recipient personally and professionally.
